karsilamas

airport of the future

info

Airports may only be composed of landside, terminal, and airside—but it’s much more than that. It’s a gateway to a nation, a community, a culture, a terrain.

Karsilamas (balkan dance: turkish origin, means ‘to meet’, or ‘to welcome’, aims to address the mediterrenian humaniterian crisis through a floating airport, hosting international travellers  while training refugee population to create valuable workforce.

Our design inspiration comes from several ideas- the structure is inspired by catamaran boat with swath technology. The two wings of the terminal building takes an arc shape to  accomodate as many gates as possible, while the two rising towers’ form is extracted from traditional balkan dance- Katzilamas. The work ‘Kartzilamas’ means ‘to welcome’.

The floating airport will be a place where displaced communities will get temporary shelter and training facilities that will teach them useful skills for them to shine in developed countries.
The airport will also have research facilities, hotels, public amenities, clubs, brand showrooms, etc
