Using the results of the research, the masterplan design proposes several nodes (main, educational, and economic) to interconnect the community using the triple bottom line focus (people, planet, and profit).

Several education nodes focusing on mangrove research, fish research, and satellite classroom spaces are proposed along the north-south axis of the existing school at the center of the island.

The main node hosts the primary and secondary school, along with the proposed vocational school. All the proposed structures of the nodes will be constructed by vocational school students, integrating the local workforce in community development.

low tide level condition
interventions

Due to the island’s proximity to the ocean, the Kilifi creek is salty and it has drastic tidal water level difference. This condition makes the high tide level difficult for the people to navigate and land on the island.

high tide level condition
Our proposal revolves around the idea of utilizing this threat as an opportunity. We propose making the island’s east wing as tourism zone, with ecotourism spread around the edges of the island.

proposal to mitigate threats
With living breakwater, we propose to sustain the marine and soft-edge life and enhance the edge protection.

We also propose various landing sites for the fishermen and the visitors to navigate towards the inland smoothly.
